During the wars between Sui and Tang Dynasties, a famous beggar Wan enlisted as a low rank soldier under the command of general Liu Hung-chi of the Tang. He was a brave, proficient soldier and won many battles. After the war, general Liu recommended him to be a public servant but he refused and retired from the army. Governor of Yu province was corruptible and obstructed the new laws.
