Mac St. Clair is a top heart surgeon who has developed a reputation for being difficult to work with. Mac is constantly at war with the chief of surgery who Mac feels is incompetent and shouldn't have been awarded the position. A former patient of Mac's who works as a journalist returns to Mac's life and asks him for assistance in investigating dangerous practices being undertaken in the surgical department of Mac's hospital. Once the investigation begins Mac feels as though there is more to the chief of surgery than meets the eye.
