The suspicions of the assassination of the Count of Leon fall on Ruy. Even Jimena starts to doubt him. Ruy insists on his innocence and builds up the courage to declare his love to her. He promises that, when he becomes a knight, he will ask for her hand. Jimena swears to wait for him because she thinks that her engagement with Orduño is broken off after having made a pact with Flaín. However, after Flaín's death, Orduño has become the new Count of Leon, and he is not willing to break off his engagement with Jimena. He blackmails Jimena's parents, threatening to take away their privileges if Jimena stands by her decision to not marry him. Alfonso, who did not expect to inherit the Kingdom of Leon, is still feeling insecure in his new position. Sancha and Urraca take advantage of this to start a subtle fight between them to settle who will be Alfonso's right hand and, consequently, rule through him. One of Alfonso's first actions as king is to entice Ruy to stay in Leon by his side. He
