While dazzling her old friend Val with her new home and job, Fran intervenes to stop Brighton's relentless harassment of Maggie. Though he defends himself by claiming to be just plain bad, Fran and Val recall an old childhood friend whose behavior makes Brighton's appear tame by comparison. Meanwhile, an overworked Maxwell claims he is too busy to take his family to a carnival at Brighton's school. When Fran discovers he was caught smoking at school, Brighton quickly credits her and Val as the inspiration for the misdeed. But, as she frets over losing her job because of the incident, Maxwell insists he cannot be bothered and tells Fran to handle whatever problem Brighton is having.
