As Mother's Day approaches, Fran learns about Maxwell's habit of distracting the children to keep them from thinking about their own mother's death. So, in his latest ploy, Maxwell takes Fran and the kids to look over the exclusive country club he has just joined. But, when Fran and Grace. are invited to participate in the mother-daughter beauty pageant coming up on Mother's Day, Maxwell is forced to think fast. However, after persuading Maxwell that the pageant is just what Grace needs, Fran learns that the children remember more than Maxwell knows about their late mother. After sawing Fran in half as part of their magic act for the pageant, Grace loses the instructions for the trick and is unable to put her back together, leaving her vulnerable to C.C.'s devious practical joke.
